The 2013-2014 winter season has been a rough one.  Winter came on strong with days and weeks of freezing temperatures.  The Great Lakes are currently 90% frozen and are on track to set a record on ice coverage.  After several seasons of below-average snow accumulation, we’re having more of a “normal” year.  For references, as of Feb 16, we hit 94.8″ and our season average is 94.7″.  At this time last year we had 46.1″ and our total season accumulation for 2011-2012 was 36.7″.

We had extreme cold temperatures AND a blizzard the first week of January.  While Mike and the boys were off because of the bad weather, my work doesn’t close for anything short of a zombie apocalypse or chemical warfare so I was expected to show up for work.  Thankfully, I did decide to leave early both days of the blizzard and take work home.

We didn’t get much snow but driving conditions were terrible due to the wind.  The afternoon when the blizzard was at it’s worst it took me 45 minutes to drive the 3.5 miles home from work.  I had to drive about 5-10 MPH the entire time due to zero visibility.  It truly was terrifying.

My windshield was not fogged up – you literally couldn’t see very far past the end of the car.  I drove the entire way home with my hazard lights flashing.

This is a pretty busy 5-lane road.  I think I saw 6-10 cars on my entire ride home.  I pretty much drove down the middle of the road because I had no idea where the lanes were.

Driving in a blizzard = not fun

Thankfully there weren’t too many people out on the roads:
